Unfamiliar Text Practice

This article ‘Home Sweet Home Office’, talks about the advantages and disadvantages of working at home. Sharon Stevenson expresses her negative views towards working in an office surrounded by stress and work pressures and states how she clearly enjoys the freedom of working from home even though there can be downsides. When she describes her previous workplace she uses a colloquial tone, metaphor, satirical sentence structures and listing to outline her negative perspective of the corporate life. She uses these same techniques to reinforce her positive feelings towards working from home (WFH).

Stevenson uses satirical sentences to emphasise her feelings towards home and the ‘corporate world’ which characterises the structure of the text. We are presented with sentences that sound nice and ironic then carried to the next that has a tinge of humour. “… from a location, I adore, while wearing clothing with elasticated waists”. I doing this we can understand her feelings towards working at home. In contrast to this sentence structure, we are also presented with sentences that have a repetition of negatives. “I had to drag myself through the calendar doing work I didn’t like, in a place I didn’t want to be…” Stevenson has used listing of negatives to present her non-humorous feelings towards the workplace. The slight humour presented throughout the text emphasises her positive
